Obendrein wirkt es kein bisschen zickig, liegt sehr stabil in der Hand und selbst in starken BOEN bewegt sich der Druckpunkt praktisch nicht von der Stelle. Da sich das ohne Segel Winddruck völlig flachzieht, es lässt sich spielerische untertauchen oder wie bei Manövern Duck Jibes ziehen durch den Wind. Die Charakteristik macht es auch zu einem der radikalsten Segeln auf der Welle, dass sich leichthändig dirigieren lässt. Das Segel vergleichsweise wirkt direkt und lässt sich nicht ganz so dynamisch anpumpen. Über die Schothornspannung kann man es aber gut auf die persönlichen Vorlieben abstimmen, denn das Segel funktioniert sowohl mit sehr wenig Schothorn am Zug, als auch mit sehr flach aufgebaut. 1.3 Kilo der nur leichte Mast ist bei Bedingungen mäßigen gebrochen, Gaastra laut werden jetzt stärkere dimensionierte Masten eingesetzt.

Vineyard Haven Yacht Club, Martha's Vineyard, MA

The East Coast Junior Windsurfing Championship, a US Sailing Junior Olympic Festival Event, will be hosted by the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club on the Island of Martha's Vineyard July 17-18, 2008 (Thursday-Friday). There will also be an optional windsurfing/racing clinc July 16 (Wed) and a separate Long Distanc Race July 19 (Sat). The Long Distance Race is part of the Vineyard Cup (www.VineyardCup.com), and is open to all ages on any windsurf gear.

1 RULES

1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008, including U.S. Windsurfing Association Prescriptions, and the Sailing Instructions.

2 ELIGIBILITY, EQUIPMENT, and ENTRY

July 17-18, 2008

All competitors must be under 19 years of age (have not reached their nineteenth birthday prior to December 31, 2007) and must be members of US Sailing (for U.S. citizens). The competition will be held on Techno 293 One Designs. Open rigs are permitted under the following USWA prescriptions below.

Under 12 (U12) years old - Maximum sail size 6.0m

Under 15 (U15) years old - Maximum sail size 7.5m

Under 17 (U17) years old - Maximum sail size 8.5m

Under 19 (U19) years old - Maximum sail size 9.5m

A minimum of three competitors is necessary to constitute an age group class. Otherwise, age groups will be combined.

2.1a Per Techno 293 Class Rules as modified by USWA, sails with more than 3 cambers and/or 7 battens are prohibited

2.1b Only masts from the approved class list with no more than 75 percent carbon and weight equivalents are permitted.

2.1c Booms are restricted to alloy/aluminum construction � note that carbon booms are not permitted under class rules

2.1d Only original fins or manufacturers' replacements permitted. The maximum fin size under class rules is 46 cm.

2.1e Techno 293 Class Rules are available at http://www.techno293.org/ Sail sizes have been modified by USWA prescriptions.

6 VENUE

6.1 Vineyard Haven Yacht Club, Owen Little Way, Vineyard Haven is the host of the East Coast Junior Windsurfing Championships.

6.2 Racing will be on Vineyard Haven Harbor or alternatively in the VH Lagoon for severe weather.

7 THE COURSES

7.1 The courses will be described in the Sailing Instructions.

8 SCORING

8.1 The Low-Point Scoring System, RRS Appendix A, will be used.

8.2 Competitors will have one race discarded for every four races completed.

8.3 2 races are required to constitute the Championship.

9 PRIZES Prizes will be awarded to competitors placing in respective divisions.

10 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See Rule 4, Decision to Race. The event organizers, Vineyard Haven Yacht Club, its employees, volunteers, and staff will not accept any liability for damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

11 HOUSING

A limited amount of housing in private homes is available to competitors in the East Coast Windsurfing Championships on a first come, first serve basis. The earlier we know you need housing the better.

12 TRAVEL TO MARTHA'S VINEYARD

This is peak season on the island of Martha's Vineyard so getting there can be a challenge, but once you're there everything will be easy. You will not need a car on the Vineyard as we can pick you up from the ferry and everything is within walking distance of Vineyard Haven Yacht Club. There are three options for air travel. Fly to Boston Logan airport and take bus from Logan airport to Woods Hole on Peter Pan/Bonanza Bus www.peterpanbus.com The bus service is easy and picks up right at the terminal and drops off right at the Woods Hole ferry. There are also flights direct to Martha's Vineyard. Third option is to fly to Providence, RI but bus/ferry service requires connections.

The East Coast Junior Windsurfing Championships concluded Friday after two days of racing and a clinic on Wednesday.

This championship was a US Sailing Junior Olympic Regatta and featured kids from all around the nation. Hosted by the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club in Martha's Vineyard. The racing saw mostly light air and the most significant breeze on Friday. The principle race officer for the event was former World Windsurfing Champion Nevin Sayre. The Wednesday clinic was put on by senior instructor trainer, Britt Viehman, from Florida.

Gold fleet enjoyed a variety of wind conditions and race courses including some slalom downwind legs.

After nine races and one throwout, in first place overall for the gold fleet was local girl Solvig Sayre. Second was Austin Emer from Clearwater Florida.

Silver fleet introduced many youngsters to racing for the first time and featured reaching starts, gybing around a single mark and then reaching back to the finish.

Following the epic 2 for 10, we hit up Andre Paskowski (Fanatic, North Sails) for the low down on his most recent internet offering.

Q: You and Gollito have just released another awesome freestyle video on the internet. Where and when did you film this?

"I went on a trip to Egypt with Gollito 4 weeks ago. We did some photos and I filmed a little bit. After 2-3 days i realised that the footage is quite good and i decided to film more and do this clip. We spent around 10 days in Soma Bay and 6 days in Dahab."

Q: Conditions looked amazing, was it really that good?

"I been to Dahab loads of times already, so i knew it was going to be good there, but Soma Bay was something new for me. I really liked it there. Also Gollito had lots of fun. For him it was the first time ever in Egypt and i bet it wont be the last time."

Q: Do you and Gollito normally train together?

"Yes we do. We spent lots of time together in El Yaque. Besides sailing together we also work together on photo and video projects. It is always funny hanging around with Gollito."

Q: The moves in 2 for 10 shocked the freestyle world, was it hard for you to raise the bar again?

"Well, i really enjoy filming and try to push Gollito to do different and new moves. I think we are a good team. He's such a talented sailor, so every movie we'll be able present something new!"

Q: Have you considered making a full length freestyle movie?

"I am always trying to find new projects. Me and my Partner Sebastian Dorr, who's in charge of the cutting, has already made Wet and Salty, and Flashback. But i guess the time for printed DVDs is almost over. The amount of time and money you have to invest is just not worth it. Then when you see your best friends burning your own DVD, or some DVD seller on the Beach try to sell you a Copy of Wet and Salty for 2 Euros, it's pretty frustrating. My plan is to concentrate (besides my windsurfing) on Videos for internet release. This way everybody gets to see them, and my sponsors get more exposure. The next release is planned for August, it will feature Gollito, Victor and Me in Pozo and Fuerte. It's gonna be a good one, for sure!"

Q: You seem to invent new moves all the time, do you think freestyle will continue to progress at this rate, or will it start to level off?

"I think the level will continue to rise. Maybe we will not see so many new moves, but we will see sailors doing moves faster, higher, and more consistently. All the young kids are really talented and motivated, so I'm sure we'll see impressive things in the future."

Windsurf Channel Crossing with Guy Cribb

British Champion windsurfer Guy Cribb (North Sails) and Antoine Albeau of France, are about to attempt to windsurf across the English Channel from Cherbourg to Poole- over 70 nautical miles (more than 130 kms) of rough seas, some of the busiest shipping lanes in the world and howling winds to raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Trust and their French counterpart A Chacun Son Cap.

The Ellen MacArthur Trust aims to support, empower and enliven children suffering from cancer, leukaemia or other serious illnesses by introducing them to the joys of sailing.

The word of the day was "sick". Everyone who saw these last heats will leave the place stoked like hell.

But first things first.
The double on Saturday brought amazing action to Milos Beach. top riders in yellow lycras were waiting for their opponents to move forward and fight for better positions.

Young Swedish rider Niklas Strahlen (RRD/Simmer Style) was fighting his way through, beating Jakub Kosmowski (Tabou/Gaastra) as well as Andy "Bubble" Chambers (JP/NP) until he got stoped by Normen Günzlein (JP/NP). In the end he finished in 6th Position what is a great success. Normen met then Nikolas Akgazcyan (Starboard/Gun Sails) and as we all know the heat had to be stopped because of the dropping wind. In the end, Niko even broke his mast and had to be brought back to the beach by the rescue boat. As Niko had to leave the place at Saturday night the heat couldn't be repeated and Normen, who was leading the stopped heat, went one step further. In heat 33 he met the newcomer of this season the Belgium dude Stevan van Broeckhoven (F2). The young man was on fire and Normen had to fight hard to advance, but he knew what to do and in the end of the 5min heat G186 was in front. And as he was already on fire he was fully motivated during his heat against Andre Paskowski (Fanatic/North Sails). Another unbelievable heat was on the water. Andre and Normen, the two freestyle heroes of the team germany gave everything and as the chop was pretty high you could see "sick" jumps. All other riders and the greek spectators on the beach went crazy when both guys showed fantastic high one handed flakas almost at the same time. When the red flag went up and the heat was over Normen was once again announced as the winner of the heat and the final run against Antxon Otaegui (JP/NP) was about to begin. Both competitors on JP Boards and Neil Pryde sails in the same colour, pretty hard to say who is who… the judges had to use binoculars at the beginning to recognize the guys.

The almost 20 knots onshore wind brought them closer to the beach during the heat and they were fighting straight in front of the judge tower. Normen pulled a funnel Diablo, a nice switch kono and even had a kulo on his side and also other moves. Antxon showed his style in moves like switch chachoos, clef first punyeta Diablo, a "sick" ponch and esliders on both sides. In the end the riders and spectators were waiting severall minutes for the decision of the judges which had a hard time to decide between the two riders. a tough job.

It was Antxon Otaegui from Spain in the end who the judges had in first position. 3 of 5 judges gave their vote for him and a 3:2 decision shows once again how close it has been.

Right at the prize giving ceremony you could already feel how hard this night will be!!! Free corona for everyone brought the guys in the right mood and after packing their stuff most of them hit the road to go and celebrate in the famous "zeus bar"!!!
And if the party will be just half as good as the Corona Party last night, you better get in the way of the boys.

Michael Naumann wins first leg of the German speed championship

In gusty low wind conditions Michael Naumann (Loft sail) won the first leg, which counts toward for windsurfing the championship of the German speed.

The wind was straight enough for top speed around 30 knots, not also bad for choppy the conditions in Drankse/in reproaches. Thorsten Mallon (F2, north) came into second before Manfred Merle.

Marina Alabau Spain leads to the top of the ISAF World Rankings

Spain rise to the top of national positions in the latest version of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings.
Directed by Marina Alabau (ESP), which holds the world # 1 spot in the Women's RS: X, Spain now has five crew Ranked among the top three in the world and across all 11 Olympic events.

Men's Windsurfing - RS: X

MIARCZYNSKI Przemyslaw (POL) stays top for the fourth consecutive men RS: X Rankings, a bronze medal in the Championship of Europe from Brest to the latest addition to his trophy cabinet. However, the world # 2 Joao Rodrigues (POR) has closed the gap on the leader, the cut-off points' difference at the top less than 50 after he was crowned champion of Europe 2008 in France.

Behind the first two, Julien BONTEMPS (FRA) climbs two places to # 3 after a magnificent month for the French. Since the annulment of the Medal of the race in this year's World Championship in New Zealand, BONTEMPS has found his form and follow-up to a silver medal in the performance of Europeans to win gold in Medemblik.

It's also been a good few weeks for the Netherlands "Dorian VAN RIJSSELBERGE. A fourth place at the Europeans was followed by second in Medemblik to lift him up three places in this ranking release # 19. His colleague and rival for windsurfing Dutch Olympic spot Casper Bouman (NED) is also growing, up five places to # 11. Other sailors in this Ranking release that make good profits after strong finishes, both in Minsk and Medemblik CARIOLOU Andreas of Cyprus, until five to # 29, and 19-year-old Elliot Carney of Great Britain, which rises from # 85 to # 56.

From Women's Windsurfing - RS: X

It has been a great month for the Women's RS: X world # 1 Marina Alabau (ESP), who retains his European title in Brest, before taking victory in Medemblik. The Spanish has maintained first place in the rankings since February 2007 and on current form (which has finished on the podium at all ISAF Graded event he has competed in this year) seems destined to be a fixture there for some time.

Hyeres winner Zofia KLEPACKA (POL) remains at # 2 after a fourth place at the Europeans, while Charline PICON (FRA) to # 3 and Barbara Kendall (NZL) to # 4 are also indifferent after winning the silver medals in Brest and Medemblik respectively.

Although PICON has the highest classification, Faustine MERRET (FRA) will represent France at the Olympic Games this August. May proved to be a good month for the reigning Olympic champion, who finished just behind PICON to win bronze at the Europeans and sailed very impressive all week in Medemblik, losing only on the podium after his illness was ruled out of the Medal of the race. MERRET gains a place in this Ranking release until # 5.

Also moving up Blanca MANCHON (ESP), from # 11 to # 6 and reigning World Champion Alessandra Sensini (ITA), rising two places to # 8. Athena Greek sailor Antonia FREY gains five places to # 16. Bulgaria's Irina Konstantinov-BONTEMPS also enjoys an important impetus in this Ranking release. She won eight sites until # 22 after a 16th the Europeans and seventh place in Medemblik.

The Gorge Freestyle frenzy Back

The Gorge Freestyle Frenzy americas North is the first strong winds Freestyle windsurfing competition, and this year again for the sixth consecutive year 2. It claimed to be the only contest freestyle advanced americas Northern pointed out that 48 competitors from as far away as Maui and Ontario.

10.000 athletes to compete in the Asian Beach Games '08

Indonesia will make history from the 18th to October 26, 2008, when it hosts the first games of beach Asia in the world. Bali will become the venue of this international event which will see 45 countries participating with more than 10000 athletes, officials, media and all volunteers who come to the Island of the Gods for this world-class event.

At a press conference held in Puri Santrian Hotel in Sanur, President of The National Olympic Committee of Indonesia (Koni), Ibu Rita Subowo officially announced and informed the press about the ongoing preparations for the 2008 Asia Games beach, marks the largest event ever hosted in Bali.

"Through the Beach Games Asia 2008, Bali will become the focal point of Sporting Tourism in Asia. In addition to strengthen Bali as one of the known tourist destinations in the world, but also the independence of Indonesia as a of the major sporting nations in Asia. UK's Techno fleet tested in Rutland Water

Rutland Water, Part 2 of the UKWA Inland Series and an RYA selection event for those wishing to apply for the 2008/2009 Bic Techno National Junior Squad and also part of the selection process for the team who will represent Team GBR at the Techno World Championships in Sopot, Poland in August. National Squad coach Oli Woodcock, together with Ian Roberts and Isy Hutchinson were in attendance on behalf of the RYA.

The Techno Fleet which is ever growing was represented by 53 Techno sailors on the main course comprising of both 6.8 and 7.8 fleets. We were treated to some very close, entertaining and at times surprising racing. It is also good to see the new Bic One Design sail in attendance, mixing it with the Tushingham TK's.

Saturday started with Matt Brown taking the lead in the first race, but Sam Sills, reigning 6.8 World Champion, was hot on his heels and took over the lead at the end of the last upwind leg, leading to the finish. George Bowles was not far behind taking 3rd position, with Kieran Martin coming in 4th and 1st 6.8. The first 7.8 girl in that race was Nicola Granger followed by Becky Plummer and Chloe Bennett. The 6.8 girls were led by Imogen Sills.

In race 2 the wind had dropped slightly with the leaders still being Sam, Matt and George, but a slight change in the 7.8 girls fleet with Becky Plummer earning herself a fine 5th place (1st girl), Joanna Evans 6th and Nicola 7th, with Stuart Hards taking 4th overall and 1st 6.8. The South West 6.8 girls again showed their talent, with Laurel 1st, Imogen 2nd and Noelle Finch 3rd.

After lunch race 3 began, and the wind had lifted slightly, Josh Leadbetter stormed through the fleet and followed Sam over the line to gain a 2nd place.

Race 4 on Saturday was the NCH Marathon, which is a sponsored event and means that the competitors sail a marked course around the perimeter of the lake, around 11 to 14 miles I believe. Unfortunately, the wind had dropped, but it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the Techno fleet. The start was led by Nicola Granger who was overtaken by Sam Sills who was 1st Techno at the first tower with Matt Brown and George Bowles in 2nd and 3rd place keeping these positions till the end. Kieran Martin was the 1st 6.8 boy.

Sunday dawned bright and sunny, with the hope of another 4 races to complete the weekend, we were not disappointed. In the first race of the day Charlie Money scooped himself a superb 3rd place behind Sam Sills and Matt Brown, with George Bowles 4th and Sam Conroy in 5th.

Race 4 on Sunday was the most surprising of the weekend with a massive wind shift occurring as the leaders were approaching the upwind mark, this caused the leaders to suddenly be put back by around 18 places with a lot of work to do to recover their positions.

Final results:
7.8 Boys – 1st Sam Sills, 2nd Matt Brown, 3rd George Bowles.
7.8 Girls – 1st Becky Plummer, 2nd Nicola Granger, 3rd Chloe Bennett.
6.8 Boys – 1st Kieran Martin, 2nd Stuart Hards, 3rd Jack Plummer

Julien Bontemps wins the Delta Lloyd Regatta

some lost. According to many Olympians, this year's Delta Lloyd Regatta has been a good training for Beijing with an interesting end.

"Today was a different competition", said overall winner Julien Bontemps (FRA). "It is interesting to finish the series like this. I had a good start with Dorian. Of course I was covering him, but my upwind speed was bad and he was in front of me."

The two Dutchmen Dorian van Rijsselberge and Casper Bouman, both coached by McIntosh (NZL), like the heavy weather conditions and were flying. Going into the Medal Race, Bouman was in ninth position. He needed to finish top six in order to qualify for Beijing. He took the bullet, but missed the sixth position by just one point. He has one more chance in Kiel. If he fails, Van Rijsselberge will go.

Despite the fact he has a full nomination of NOC*NSF, he lost the national selection to Bouman, who still needs to complete his nomination. Today, Van Rijsselberge sailed in second position as he saw Bouman making a small mistake at the bottom mark:

"I was eager to catch him and wanted to make a smooth gibe, but I accidentally hooked into my harness and made a catapult." Bontemps passed him and secured his overall victory, followed by Van Rijsselberge and Tom Ashly from New Zealand.

Marina Alabau (ESP) did not take any risks in the women fleet: "I already had a big lead, so I took it easy. It was heavy going downwind in these choppy conditions. I did not have much control." But the Spanish European Champion finished third and won the regatta, followed by Barbara Kendall (NZL) and Blanca Manchon (ESP), who took the final bullet.

KPWT Tours heads to Paros in Greece

Paros, one the beautiful Cyclades Islands in Greece, will be the theater of the Paros Kiteboard World cup, scheduled in July, 19th to 25th This exciting event is the result of a co-organization agreement between the Paros Kite Pro Center, major actor of the sport in Greece and the KPWT, international circuit of the world cup of kiteboarding since 1999.

This is also the opportunity for the KPWT to come back in Paros, where the team held a stage of the 2001 and 2006 circuit. Located in Pounda at Paros Kite Pro Center, which offers top riding conditions, the event will gather the top pro international kiteboarders's competition board to be further announced - for 6 days of relentless competition with a 30,000 prize money at stake, and points for the freestyle, course racing world title. From April 12 to 18th, more than 50 world-class kiteboarding athletes from all over the world will be competing at the renowned Mondial du Vent, the most prestigious kiteboarding event in Europe. This is the first time that the PKRA World Tour competition will be held in France and the addition of Mondial du Vent to the ever expanding realm of the PKRA solidifies the Tour's credibility as having the best kiteboarding events in the world.

More than 160,000 people are expected to grace the event with a full week of fun-filled and exciting kiteboarding and windsurfing actions.

The best kiteboarders in North and South America, Europe, Australia and other parts of the world will be battling it out for a chance at the €45,000 purse and will be competing in three disciplines - Freestyle, Course Racing and Long Distance.

Freestyle is an exciting kiteboarding discipline where riders are rated by a full panel of international judges based on technical difficulties and hard core style. Course Racing brings the best kiteboard racers in the world challenging each other in a series of racing events on a preconfigured course.

In the Long Distance event, riders start in a pack and race to the finish line in a format of 20 kms.

Reigning Freestyle World Champion Aaron Hadlow (United Kingdom) and last year's runner-up Kevin Langeree (Netherlands) are once again expected to give an all-out performance for a shot at this year's world championship title.

They were also set to benefit financially from the contract.

The Russian export blend crude oil had been described as very dense, thick oil, making it particularly persistent in the event of a spillage and a big threat to the Firth of Forth.

A Scottish Green Party investigation had previously found SPT were responsible for spilling around 35,000 gallons of oil in the Gulf of Mexico - but failed to disclose the information when providing official evidence to the Scottish Parliament. In written evidence to the parliament the company, SPT Marine, claimed an "excellent" record on ship-to-ship oil transfers by only referring to incidents dated after the shocking oil spill in 1995.

SAS campaigners were involved in several actions against the proposal and were on hand to present a petition to Forth Ports at their agm last year calling for them to say 'NO' to the proposal. Portugal to host 2008 Windsurfing Grand Prix

The 2008 Portugal Windsurfing Grand Prix will take place in Sines, between the 6th and 10th May.

This is an important year for windsurfing. The Formula Windsurfing Grand Prix series goes global. Where better to start the world tour than in Portugal, home of so many international events and championships.

At this years Sines-Portugal Grand Prix we will be unveiling our bid to represent olympic windsurfing in 2012: the Formula One-Design.
Overpower have consistantly delivered quality events; and we look forward to a long association with the municipality of Sines.

Günzlein Normen conquers the Toro Andaluz

Tarifa, often called the European capitol of windsurfing didn't disappoint us at all. What more an you wish for the first event in a new season? Nothing!!! Sure a second double elimination would have been great, sure a bit more stable condition would have made it easier but as windsurfers we're used to life with compromise and what we got here again was just perfect!!! No doubt…

Normen takes home a lot of points for the overall title, that's for sure. He is the one that the guys will be chasing now but as the young German is a pro he will handle the pressure for sure. Competing for many years on the tour, having a lot of experience he will take good care to stay in leading position.

Kevin Mevissen (RRD) on the second place is fully on fire, coming to Spain he had not much freestyle practise on his account, you might say none. His awesome performance on the water infected him again and its clear that we will see him on some other efpt stops as well.

Antxon Otaegui (JP/NP) takes the third place, amazing start for the Spanish rider. Coming from the cannaries you can't say that he's a local so it was not easier for him at all to compete here and the third place shows how well Antxon is prepared and motivated to go on tour this year.

The man of the event has to be Steven van Broeckhoven though, almost unknown to European riders he kinda appeared out of nowhere, eliminating big names all over the ladder. The Belgian magazine cant wait to get him close for some interviews and reports how he did but we can tell you straight away: GREAT!!!

The first event of a season is always a good place to see what to expect over the rest of the season. In this case Tarifa was amazing, the well known riders in the event have to watch out for the newcomers and also know now which moves they need to get in first positions.
so the next weeks before Podersdorf will be full of practising and preparing for that one, especially as it will be a combination with the PWA.

We sort of had a foretaste of what to expect, Raimondo Gasperini (Starboard), who was practising in Jeri this year started a project to support young talents and he brought some brasilian hotshots as well as Italiian styler to the Andalusian beach. The X-Ray project is fantastic; supporting riders to give them some event experience is just great. Although the brasillians cant become European Champion obviously they still improve their contest sills and push the level massive…

Wow, we had a immense competition fleet and its so hard to mention all riders, 35 riders from 15 nations hit the water leaving impressed spectators behind. Moves like double flaka, ponch, switch chachoos, super high shakas seem to become standard and if a rider is not able to do it at the beginning of the event he practises them between the heats and shows (or tries to show) it in his next heat. The excitement in this competition was amazing so if you have the chance to visit a event near you, that's definitely something you should do.

As the forecast for the last day was not good the complete (and it was complete) efpt family met at the "café del mar" in tarifa city. A super nice place, stylish as hell so it was just the perfect place to celebrate the start of the tour and the end of the event. The group went crazy all night and could only be stopped by the fact that the police shut down the place in the morning hours. Nevertheless the guys continued in tarifa downtown and surprisingly were all present at the today's super session at one pm. For the last time in this year they showed the crowds on the beach what first class freestyle is all about!!! Smiling faces all over the place showed once again that they're not just amazing competitors but a bunch of good friends who live for this sport, travel the continent and just want to know who will be the best in the end.

Hard to say our "good buys" once again to the friendly people who organize the event and support us with all we need to run the competition. But gypsies as we are we have to go and can only promise to be back next year…

As great and fantastic it was the stories told around the world about tarifa and the region of Andalusia will be just the best. We highly recommend this place to everyone in Europe and around the world. Every windsurfer and kitesurfer who wants to have a good time, great conditions and stay in a place which is fully addicted to water sport will be damn happy to come here!!!

Speed is so hot right now!!!!
It has just been confirmed that Timo Mullen equalled the Irish Speed Record going at 40,44 knots, the same speed than the current one hold by John Kenny.
Timo knew he was going really fast (he was only on 4,7m Severne Red Code, what shows how hard the conditions were), but he had to wait all week for the confirmation from the WSSRC.
It took a while for the WSSRC to confirm it. The day of the run the weather was pretty miserable, with loads of rain that made really difficult to get good video footage from the sailors, which is necessary for the official confirmation, but finally it could be confirmed. Now John Kenny and Timo Mullen need to fight to get ahead in the Irish Speed Record competition.
With this new achievement, the Driven by the Wind event at "the Ray", in Southend, is getting all the attention from the speed sailors.

Maui Sails Team

February has been an intense and happy month for all the members of the Maui Sails Team.

Josh has been flying in and out of Maui to pick up all his new babies: sails, masts, extensions, etc… Lucky guy, he managed to get some of the best Hookipa sessions in a while, allowing him to test his new wave sails, the Legend and the Global. He scored one of the biggest sailable days at Hookipa in a long time. Only him and Alex Aguera out, getting flash backs from when they sailed Jaws for the first time on their own. He also started tuning everything for his upcoming season in Slalom, in which he we'll be using Tabou Slalom boards.

Back in Cape Verde he rushed around between flights to Boa Vista, Sao Vicente, just like a proper businessmen, organizing the last details for the Cape Verde PWA event. At this moment, Josh is second at the Cape Verde event, with still the double elimination to run, so he could still have the victory in his first event sailing with Maui Sails.

Gabriel Browne (BRA-50) has now signed with the brand, and at only 17 he is one of the hottest up and coming sailors in the PWA Slalom 42 fleet.
Gabriel comes from a long line of Champion Windsurfers. He is Marcilio Brown's brother (Brawzinho), current Freestyle World champion, but also his dad and his uncle were Brazil Windsurfing Champions.
He is now in Maui, training and testing together with Barry Spanier, how says about Gabriel "We have been looking for a young racer for some time and Gabriel fits the role. He has shown some promising results over the past 2 years and we look forward to supporting him as he grows into a premier racer".
This season Gabriel will be focus on the PWA Slalom 42 and some specific Formula events. He is stocked about been with Maui Sails, saying "Joining the Maui Sails team is a dream for me and now I have great opportunity to learn more about windsurfing from some of the best people in the sport. I'm looking forward to some serious training on Maui over the next few months and then heading off to compete on the PWA World Tour Slalom 42 events. I now have all the support I need and together with my effort I'm looking forward to an exciting year".
So far, he took part in the Calema midwinters, and the young sailor finished 5th on the event (quite impressive as he was fighting with big names like Antoine Albeau, Jimmy Diaz, Gonzalo Costa) and he was really happy about the performance of his rig

At the same time, on the other side of the World, Martin van Meurs was recovering from a broken leg, wishing he could be out trying to break some speed records. But while he was recovering, his team mate Dirk Doppenberg was breaking the Doutch speed record with a 44,57 knots blast.

For both Barry Spanier and Artur Szpunar, it was an intese and happy month. With loads of testing and really good feedback from the testers, new materials to try and test and loads of motivation towards the new 2009 Maui Sails Designs.

Raceboard Euro Champ hits Civitavecchia

Raceboard masters arrive in Civitavecchia, near Rome, this week for the eagerly awaited 2008 European Championships. This early season event gives the opportunity for rivals for this year's world titles to test the strength of the opposition!

This year's championship fleet may be small - but it is very competitive!

Three of the top 4 finishers from the 2007 Worlds will be battling it out for the European Masters title including World Champion Paco Wirz (ITA 1), runner up Alex Buchau (ESP 36) and 4th placed Guiseppe Castelli (ITA 6).

Competing in the masters division for the first time will be Patrik Pollak (SVK 1), the 2006 Raceboard World Champion.

Seven nations have sent teams to Ciitavecchia - ESP, FRA, GBR, GER, ITA, SUI, and SVK.

Lega Navale, the host club, situated in Civitavecchia, a busy commercial port north of Rome, can boast a wonderful bay in front of the club that is perfect for hosting sailing regattas. Steeped in history, dating from the Etruscan Age, the city has a lot to offer the tourist as well as competitor!

Kauli Seadi wins PWA Cabo Verde '08

Kauli Seadi kicks-off the season with a critical victory over local favorite Josh Angulo and wavesailing legend Jason Polakow

The historic 2007 Cabo Verde event set the bar to an all-time high for PWA wavesailing, so it was a full house once again for the top names in the sport on the island of Sal.

A strong forecast for early in the event stayed true and a good swell with mast-high waves reeled down the racetrack at Ponta Preta on day 1

Single Elimination

The crew made no delay in getting the single elimination underway, and by sunset the judges had filtered-out four riders for a final that would go ahead on day 2.

A trend was also set on the first day for some impressive performances from riders making it through from the qualifying contest.

Dany Bruch (F2 / Gaastra) and Francisco Porcella (Mistral / Simmer) stood out from the trialists on day 1 with superb wave-reading skill and expertise to knock out some top players from this 32-man limited entry event.

The final was completed on day 2 in slightly smaller surf, and much lighter wind.

25-yr old Brazilian Kauli Seadi (JP / NeilPryde) thundered into the lead with a skilled display in tricky, light wind conditions, to give an instant return on his new sponsor's investment.

During a 40-minute heat, counting the best two waves rides each, the fluky wind truly tested the finalists' fitness and ability to catch waves and not get caught inside on the razor sharp reef.

Jason Polakow (JP / NeilPryde) went for it with his aggressive vertical attack, but paid the price for pushing it with a couple of trips to the rocks.

Polakow's big-wave partner Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde) pressured his team mate hard for third position with a smoother style, but in truth he also struggled in the smaller swell.

Josh Angulo (MauiSails) was also always going to be a major threat here after his historic victory last season.

'It was a total battle out there' he explained. 'I tried to go for a really powerful and vertical attack and look for the shorter rides and big hits on the main peak where I was hanging out.

Everyone was scratching around to catch the good sets and outdo the other to lock into a decent wave.

I know it was close and I didn't even look at the scores. It's tough you know.

You always strive for first and it kind of tastes a little strange to come second, especially after last year.'

Seadi chose different tactics to Angulo to wrap-up the victory, including one spectacular aerial over Swift who was swimming in the impact zone.

'I tried to go for the ones that opened-up into longer blowier sections and to do a mix of turns and connect the ride all the way down the reef', said the 2007 World Champion.

Double Elimination

As soon as the double elimination got started some big names spewed out by up-and-coming talent.

Levi Siver (Quatro / NeilPryde) was the first victim of an on-form Jonas Ceballos (Fanatic / Simmer), and Marcilio Browne (Mistral / Gaastra), who fully made-up for a stuttering start in the single elimination.

Next to fall was Nik Baker (Mistral / North) who had a tough time in the fading conditions against light wind specialists Thomas Traversa (Tabou / Gaastra) and Camille Juban (Quatro / GUN).

Boujmaa Guillol (Starboard / Severne) was also ejected in that heat despite throwing some outrageous Goytas right onto the rocks.

But Traversa scored wave of the day with perfect timing and a flowing rhythmic groove connecting all his turns together.

The remaining second round heats had to wait until day 3 when the event moved up to the west coast to a spot known as 'Little Ho'okipa'.

25-minute heat duration was set with the best 2 waves counting and the best 2 riders advancing at a time.

The action was hot once again and competition was tight for spots in every following heat.

Trialist Kai Katchadourian (Quatro / Simmer), a regular Cabo Verde visitor, really got the chance to show-off his knowledge of the islands breaks.

The American survived a tough encounter against Scott McKercher (Starboard / Severne), John Skye (F2 / Naish) and Ross Williams (Tabou / Gaastra) before getting on a roll to reach the top 8.

Things got serious in the third round when more top names fell by the wayside.

Both 2007 season runner-up Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / Simmer), and former world champion Kevin Pritchard (Starboard / Gaastra) were axed by fiery performances from Thomas Traversa (Tabou / Gaastra), and Marcilio Browne – the reigning freestyle world champ.

Traversa shone brightly with his radical vertical riding style, which that saw him launch tweaked airs and show aggressive gouging of the steep head-to-half mast-high wave faces.

And Browne pulled a perfect air taka and looks set to fulfill another prophecy to reach the top of the wave sailing rankings just as he has in freestyle windsurfing.

But the star of the day had to be Alex Mussolini (RRD / NeilPryde) who clocked a 9.0 for a Goyta and big aerial back-to-back on the same ride.

But fading light and dropping breeze brought the day to an end before 6 agonizing days were spent on hold waiting for new swell and wind.

Eventually time just ran out and Kauli Seadi breathed a sigh of relief.

'It's the perfect start to the season for me', grinned Seadi at event HQ today.

'New year, new gear and a win to polish it off.

I'm especially happy that I can pay my new sponsors back so soon for their faith in me, plus it means a lot to beat someone as talented as Josh in waves of such quality.

Runner-up Angulo was instrumental once again in organizing this event in his back yard. 'I'm glad we got this event together again. It means everything to me to have riders of this quality here, plus I'm happy for Kauli as he's an exceptional sailor, so I'm just looking forward to seeing the contract signed to have the PWA back in 2009.'

KPWT or PKRA?

You have probably asked yourself why are there two governing bodies in kitesurfing/kiteboarding?
KPWT stands for Kiteboard Pro World Tour and PKRA for Professional Kiteboard Riders Association.
Their goal is exactly the same - working out a world kiteboarding tournament.

An easy Google search will help you understand why KPWT and PKRA are running in different paths.

There a lot of kitesurfers looking for those answers.

The question is: having different competitions and ruling formats, wouldn't it be possible to join both 'brains' and bring up the best competition ever made like ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) has been doing for a long time?

The sponsors would get a focused attention, the running custs would be cut to half, the KPWT/PKRA would strength one unique tour brand, the merchandising turnover would rise quickly and the public eyes would be focused on one single tour. Oh, and by the way, the professional kitesurfers would certainly be sure that they would be trying to be the absolute best athlete of their sport.

Not the X or Y champion in a determined category.

Joining KPWT and PKRA is not easy. But, isn't waveriding a tough challenge by itself?

Close call for Hawaii Kiteboarders: Proposed 200' Kite Ban in Hawaii Deferred

The Hawaii Senate Committee on Water and Land deferred a proposed bill this afternoon that would have banned windsurfing and kiteboarding within 200 feet of swimmers and surfers. According to the bills sponsor, Senator Les Ihara Jr, the move "effectively dismissed it from further consideration".

Senator Ihara says he introduced the bill at the request of a constituent.

SBC Kiteboard contacted the senator to find out more and he informed us, "while the legislative idea in SB 2091 seemed worthy of consideration, many valid concerns were raised about the bill even before the hearing. As a result, I suggested to the committee chair prior to today's hearing that unless the concerns were adequately addressed, it may be wise to terminate consideration on the bill."

Hundred of windsurfers and kiteboarders from around the world flooded the Committee with emails and letters when word of the bill spread the day before todays hearing.

Thankfully clear heads prevailed, and the rights of windsurfers and kiteboarders have been protected for now.

Kiteboarding and windsurfings safety record with other user groups has been extremely good. Was the desire to keep windsurfers and kiteboarders off of "surfers wave's" the motivating factor behind this latest attempt to limit windsurfing and kiteboarding? Very Likely. One thing is clear, we as kiteboarders will always need to work together to protect our rights to fair access.

Kauli Seadi's dreams come true as a sensational win on his doorstep continues the 2007 trend of home advantage. This crucial victory marks the Brazilian's first event title of the season, and protects his grip on the tour lead.

There was no doubt in the crowd's minds as to who'd won as a throng of supporters carried Seadi from the water's edge to the podium before the decision was announced.

The judges seemed to agree and a unanimous 5-0 decision awarded him the victory.

The biggest kiteboarding competition in Brazil kicked off to another great year with the start of the KiteXtreme Brazil 2007 in Coqueiro beach located in Luнs Correia, Parnaнba – some 450 km away from Fortaleza. Located on the northeast coast of Brazil, Coqueiro will be the home of some of the world's best kiteboarders for five days which will run until the 23rd of September, 2007.

The best conditions of the day were at the beginning of the session from 11am until 1pm with winds of 35-knots with higher gusts of 40-knots and a good angle of 125. The 'big' winds that were predicted throughout the weather circles for the later afternoon unfortunately did not materialize and the normally fluid southeast was tempestuous and moody with wide scopes of change in the wind strength measured at the start, middle and finish by the race crew.

This made getting the right moment difficult. Hats off to Antoine Albeau for a very good performance and for being in the right place at the right time. His speed of 47.69 is the third fastest of all time. Record holder Finian Maynard had an off day as he was unable to find the right tuning, gust or pick the right gear in the constantly changing conditions.

Personal bests were attained by David Garrel (45.96), Cedric Bordes (45.94), Thomas Gaudiot (42.71), Markus Poeltenstein (40.40) and Valerie Ghibaudo (39.93). Congratulations.

"I beat my own record today" explains Antoine "the angle of wind was better than our last attempt. We simply missed still a little wind. I think that I can still go faster even if it is really not easy to gain 0,5 knots at this speed."

Saintes Maries de la Mer in southern france will open its Speed Canal again. The chase for records and the 50knots barrier will take place with a selection of competitors on a 1000M canal in Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, France. The event is slated to take place throughout the entire winter months of 2007/08 for a period of 5-months. This is the ideal time to harness the energy generated by the famous South-East and Mistral winds and the location is proven with eight outright world records in the past 20 years.

THE CANAL
The 'Canal', as it is known to the sailors, is the unmistakable location where today's windsurfing technology has the potential to explore the unknown depths of speed. The trench itself is 1,100 meters long with a width of 30 meters.
There are three overlapping, 500 M courses on each side accommodating the four quadrant wind directions. NW, N/NE, SW & SE. The two most favourable directions are the widely known 'Mistral', which blows from a N/NE direction and the 'Le Marin', which blows from the SE. This particular wind carries enormous potential to deliver on a grand scale.
The Canal will be moulded and cared for by Christophe Simian and Fabrice David, who are very experienced collaborating record attempts in Stes. Maries and all potentially fast times will be officially ratified by the WSSRC, who will have an observer on hand.

"Masters of speed is on again!! This year our motivation has been really activated since kite riders have done good times in Namibia.
In mid of October we have started the hard work part with our excavator pilot to re shape perfectly the new streamlined banks of the canal, it is very important to get perfect wind in the bottom of competitors sails and also to have the right water level for a flatter water surface. Christophe and Fabrice have tuned the timing system. Our goal this time is to break the 50 knots barrier.

Florez Is ASP Rookie Of The Year

E365 -- French Team Quiksilver surfer, Jérémy Florez, was last night officially awarded the title of "Rookie of the Year", following the 10th and final leg of the ASP World Tour 2007 in Pipeline, Hawaii.

The only European and the youngest member of the Men's Top 44 since its creation, prodigy Jérémy Florès, at the tender age of 19, ends his first season on the elite tour in 8th place in the world rankings (with 4770 points), ahead of all the other promoted surfers. A considerable achievement.

During his first season on the ASP World Tour (formerly the WCT), Jérémy has shown remarkable consistency. After a successful debut (9th place) at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in March 2007, Jérémy followed up with a string of good performances.

He reached the quarter-finals of the Tahitian stage of the Tour, in May, after creating a shock by knocking out Kelly Slater. The ambitious youngster also fought his way through to the semi-finals at Trestles in California, and the quarter-finals of the Spanish leg in Mundaka last October.

With his 9th place in Pipeline, Jérémy fulfilled his unstated aim: to finish top of the rookies on the ASP World Tour 2007, and especially ahead of his great Australian rival Kai Otton (12th). Jérémy Florès has even managed the rare feat (along with Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater) of not getting a single 33rd place finish this season (his lowest result was 17th).

On top of that, the Frenchman produced a splendid performance on the WQS tour (double qualifying for the elite tour). He finished in 11th place in the final rankings after reaching the final of the WQS six star-rated Mr Price Pro in South Africa, and then at the prestigious US Open in July, and also won the first competition of his career at Ericeira.

The pros top tips on air travel with windsurfing gear

Some trips are epic from start to finish, and some dream missions to search out perfect surf kick-off badly from the minute the ground crew spot you lugging giant coffins into the terminal buildings.
The PWA World Tour riders have more experience than anyone at negotiating huge amounts of equipment onto airplanes.
But the recent news that British Airways are banning windsurfing and surfboards on their aircraft has certainly black-marked them amongst the watersports world.
Some airlines, such as Virgin Atlantic, have reacted positively to the massive online protests, via communities such as Facebook groups, and wisely launched counter-campaigns such 'welcome-on-boards' in a bid to get your business.
But the general picture for travellers with bulky board bags is still bleak in the light of modern weight restrictions, which are designed a mixture of eco-friendlier fuel saving, and heightened security.
Brian asked some seasoned PWA journeymen to hand over their advice on having a smooth journey, lower excess charges and avoiding that trip from hell…

BOOKING TIPS

Alex Mussolini (JP / NeilPryde): "Check the airfares and compare the totals of the fair and baggage prices. The cheapest fares and cheapest excess prices are rarely combined with the same airline."

Anne-Marie Reichmann (Naish / Naish): "I call up the airline and tell them I am bringing gear. And then I ask if they can confirm, on my ticket, that I'm bringing some extra stuff."

Chris Pressler (Starboard / Severne): "Check the rules in advance and get in contact with the airport/airline management in advance, if you feel it could get critical".

PACKING SUGGESTIONS

Chris: "Go compact, and don't rock-up with heavy triple-board monsters.

Sometimes it's better to check in the boards one by one. Surfboards were free, and sometimes angling gear goes free, so you could say the rigs are for fishing…" Alex: "Take as many masts as you can, and take just enough gear to sail during the whole trip, like 3 sails 1 boom and your best board."

Anne-Marie: "Pack more bags, but lighter ones... don't put everything in one bag and make it mega-heavy...they don't like that these days. You can pack it in 1 or 2 bags, but be prepared to divide it up in 3 bags. If they are really strict about the weight, for example, you can always put some sails, a boom and a mast in a single board bag you have around one of your boards. But some airlines like less in total still... so ... always call the airline you travel with beforehand".

CHECK-IN CHARM

Alex: "Smile! And if things get nasty, just take it! Ha Ha…"

Anne-Marie: "Arrive and check-in early, so you have more change of less waiting in line, and you have time to negotiate. Be nice, keep your patience, and also have some receipts from earlier trips handy. That way if you have to pay excess charges, you can compare it to an earlier trip, and the airline can see what is 'normal'."

Chris: "Yeah, be friendly, keep an eye on co-workers (ladies), who are new, and never be the first in line, as in moments of hurry they often make better deals. Also, show up with any papers you can get from the reservations departments".

BE PREPARED

Chris: "I always have some power lines in my bags to fix the bags onto vehicles at the destination, and in some countries I use cable clips or locks".

Anne-Marie: "Always bring long straps which are useful for stacking stuff in the car, on top of the car etc. If I rent a car I ask for roof racks...even though it costs more. That way I don't damage the car and end-up paying a lot of money in damages".

EXCESS VICTIMS?

Anne-Marie: "Everyone is lucky and unlucky at times I guess..."

Chris: "In the old days the charges were perhaps even higher, mainly because the gear was bigger, thicker, longer, and heavier. But nowadays I would think that the Maui boys will pay the most with so many stopovers to Europe".

Alex: "I think that Ricardo, and Kauli get burned a lot. I heard a lot of stories about them having to pay huge amounts or having to change flights because of the extra charges. Ricardo lost all his sails coming to Gran Canaria once too".

THE LUCKIEST PRO TRAVELLERS?

Anne-Marie: "Ha! I'd like to tell you who that is, but I don't want to 'jinx' him... he has a lucky charm and will want to keep it that way…"

Chris: "Antoine is one of the pros who always arrives on time with his gear, but that's probably just professional preparation for you. The sneakiest? There are many 'players', on tour, but it can be a lottery and it's often hard to get your gear in time before competition starts".

Alex: "Seriously I've never heard of anyone ever not losing their gear on tour...but I am quite lucky though :)".

THE BEST AIRLINES?

Anne-Marie: "TransAvia is the best! They have been great with gear to the Canary Islands every time. You have to call them up beforehand, and it's never free, but you'll rarely pay more than 60 Euros for your equipment. Super cool!"

Chris: "It's a always a gamble, but I guess, out of my experiences, there are some nice ones, like LTU, Air Berlin, sometimes Thai, Turkish, yeah, for sure, Egypt were also fine…it's just Cairo Airport that's crazy!"

Alex: "Ryanair, and the SkyTeam airlines, are pretty reasonable I think."

Young kiting champ flying high

HE'S spent the past few weeks practising in Tauranga Harbour - now Papamoa's Marc Jacobs is anxious to take his latest kitesurfing moves back to the world.

The 18-year-old professional tour rookie has had an incredible year in the sport, winning the North kiteboarding World Young Blood title in July and launching himself on to the world circuit.

He arrived back a month ago somewhat dazed from his whirlwind tour, which took in seven countries in three months, but anxious to put all his hard off-season work into practice.

"This last week, there have been pretty steady winds and I've been learning some new moves, but the forecast isn't that flash for breeze in the next little while," Jacobs said.

"That's why I'm probably going to Perth to train next month, because the winds are much steadier over there."

Windsurfers prepare for Phuket championship

PHUKET: The Eastern Windsurfing Club (EWC) is teaming up with Windsurfing Association of Thailand and Yacht Racing Association of Thailand to present Thailand's first international windsurfing rally championship from January 15 to 20.

Competitors will race along the west coast of Phuket.

The first day of racing, January 16, will take place from Nai Yang Beach to Surin Beach. On the second day, windsurfers will compete from Surin Beach to Patong. The third day will see competition move from Patong to Kata, and the final day will bring racers from Kata to Nai Harn Beach.

Winds of between eight and 25 knots are expected to propel the windsurfers along the coast in temperatures of up to 30ºC.

Windsurfers from around the world will join local surfers for the rally.

Organizers hope that the rally will help boost tourism in Phuket. Leading sports networks, including ESPN, Starsport, Fox Sports and Espanol, will broadcast the event.

Entry for the event has already closed.

An international jury will be appointed for the competition.

The rally is being held in honor of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who turned 80 years old on December 5.

EWC has previously organized windsurfing competitions in Pattaya.

Windsurfing Santa Rescued from Niagara River

(Buffalo, N.Y.) AP -- A windsurfer dressed as Santa Claus was rescued from the choppy waters of the Niagara River and sent back home to Canada.

The man was identified as John Fulton, 47, of Fort Erie, Ontario. Authorities said he apparently began windsurfing Sunday morning on the Canadian side of the river but ended up on the American side near downtown Buffalo.

A woman spotted him in the treacherous waves and called the Coast Guard, who went out in search of Santa along with the Buffalo Fire Department and Erie County Sheriff's office. Winds were high and waves were cresting at seven to eight feet.

Authorities believe Fulton was in the 37-degree water for at least 60 minutes, but he didn't appear to be injured.

An Olympic Dream, Claimed by 2 Women

Two of the top Americans in women's windsurfing are packing their wetsuits this week and traveling to New Zealand to compete in the RS:X world championships as part of

their training for the Beijing Summer Olympic Games.

This is not unusual for athletes preparing for the Games, but only one of the women, Nancy Rios, is slated to represent the United States next summer. The other woman,

Farrah Hall, is disputing the results of the team-selection trials in October. She contends that the results of an arbitration hearing in the winter will have her, not Rios, walking

in the opening ceremony.

To complicate matters, the women's windsurfing class is the only Olympic slot in sailing that the United States has yet to qualify for. There are 15 countries vying for seven

open slots in the Games. If Hall's case fails, she could be competing to earn Rios a spot in the Games.

The disputed incident at the windsurfing trials involved a collision at the start of the hotly contested last race. Rios and Hall were close on points and had begun racing when

another competitor, who did not have the right of way, crashed into them.

Man drowns while windsurfing on Sunshine Coast

A man has drowned in a wind surfing accident on Queensland's Sunshine Coast this afternoon.

It happened off Bulcock Beach at Caloundra, just after 3pm AEST.

A resident living near the beach saw the accident from his high-rise unit and alerted authorities.

Lifesavers rescued the unconscious man from the surf and tried to resuscitate him.

He was taken to Caloundra hospital where doctors pronounced him dead shortly after.

French woman to attempt Indian Ocean solo windsurf

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 March, 2006 : - - French woman windsurfer Raphaela Le Gouvello tests her boat off Fremantle Perth. Le Gouvello will make a solo attempt to conquer the Indian Ocean on 05 April starting from Exmouth in northwest Australia and finishing at Reunion Island

Frenchwoman Raphaela Le Gouvello said Wednesday she will attempt to windsurf from Australia to the French island of Reunion, 3,400 kilometres (2,108 miles) across the Indian Ocean.

Le Gouvello has already successfully sailed her custom-built windsurfing craft across the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and from Peru to Tahiti.

The 45-year-old is planning to leave the town of Exmouth in northern Western Australia on April 5 with hopes of reaching Reunion, near Mauritius, within 75 days.

The Frenchwoman will windsurf across the ocean in two-hour stints in her purpose-built "wind boat" which is 7.8 metres (26 feet) long, 1.3 metres wide and has two cabins underneath.

Le Gouvello told reporters in Perth that she has spent 15 months training for the voyage and is prepared for any emergency. "If I have to do surgery on myself, I will do it," she said. Man Killed in Kite Surfing Accident

A 29-year-old Bulgarian man was killed in a kite surfing accident in a bay near Torri I-Abjad in Armier last November 18.

According to the police, the victim, who lives in Malta, was preparing to practice kite surfing at about 3 p.m. when the wind blasted off, catching his kite and slamming him into a nearby tree.

Barely having time to recover from the impact, another strong wind picked him up again and slammed him onto the metal of a nearby room.

Although an ambulance immediately rushed to the site, sources said that he had lost a lot of blood in the accident. He still underwent surgery, but died during the operation,

The man was described initially as a paraglider. However, Henry Rota, a paragliding instructor, said that this sport is not practiced at that spot but from higher ground.

Meanwhile, Magistrate Lawrence Quintano is heading an inquiry.

Record Atlantic crossing for kitesurfing father!

French kitesurfer and the founding father of the sport has led the way yet again for the kids to follow! Having paved the way for the sport, the forty-three-year-old Manu Bertin has also paved the way across the Atlantic ocean on a kiteboard.

Christopher Columbus set out to discover the new world from the island of La Gomera in the Canaries, and it is somewhat fitting that the Frenchman chose to hit the huge challenge from this same island on April 26th. After nearly three weeks of riding, Bertin completed the massive ocean crossing.

Bertin oscillated between three different means to get pulled along by a kite, one after the other: the surfboard-shaped kite-surfing board with which he has already crossed the English Channel, the Mediterranean and the Straits between Maui and the main island of Hawaii; a catamaran whose floats are large surf boards and an inflatable longboat named Cochise – for the periods of rest and eating.

Sidelined by a 50ft catamaran, "Baies du Monde" a four-man crew aided him with the logistics and supplies, but Bertin did not go on board during the entirety of the attempt.

Fulfilling his sporting goal of going as far as possible towards the Caribbean - some 3000 nautical miles to the west - the dude is hard.

With 11 years experience of kite-surfing behind him, the man claerly knows very little about giving up. Manu Bertin has also surfed through the giant waves of Jaws in Hawaii, surfed between the icebergs in Greenland, crossed the 95-mile Channel between France and England, and crossed the Mediterranean between Cape Camarat (Var) and Calvi (Corsica) in 2005. Congrats, guy!

ISAF Conference 2007: Windsurfing auch 2012 olympisch

At the ISAF Conference 2007 in Estoril (Portugal), it was decided that windsurfing both for men and for women Olympic discipline at the Olympic Games in London (England) will remain. British Airways bans surfboards

The British Surfing Association have launched a petition to demonstrate the strength of feeling amongst surfers that British Airways recent decision should be reversed. BA have decided not to continue carrying surfboards as well as hang gliders, windsurfing boards and sails, kayaks or canoes, pole vaults or javelins on their flights from the 6th November onwards.

Karen Walton, National Director, BSA, says, "If everyone who surfs could take five minutes to go online and follow our recommended action steps then we will have a real representation of the swell of support for the reversal of this absurd decision."

The BSA asks that supporters do their bit in the following ways:
